Dekalb County, GA Jail Inmate Search & Roster 2026

DeKalb County, Georgia · Current jail and court action guide

DeKalb County Jail Inmate Lookup: Booking, Bond, Visits and Court Records

A DeKalb County jail inmate search should do more than return a name. Families usually need the booking number, current custody status, bond path, remote-visit rules, correct mail address, communication account, court date and the right phone number when the portal shows nothing.

This page brings those official details together. Use the county portal only for the live lookup or hearing search; use the practical steps below to understand the result and complete the next task without opening a dozen government pages.

Identity and accuracy warning: A booking entry or charge is not proof of guilt. Match at least two identifiers—such as date of birth, booking number, SO number or case number—before sending money, arranging a visit or sharing information. Custody, bond, court and housing details may change during the day.

Choose the fastest route

Start with the information already in your hand

1
I only know the person’s name

Open Jail Search and start with the last name. Add the first name or date of birth only when several possible records appear.

2
I have a booking or SO number

Use the identifier first. It is more reliable than a common name and will also help with deposits, calls and jail questions.

3
I have a criminal case number

Use Tyler Smart Search for the case, then Search Hearings for the scheduled court, date, courtroom and judicial officer.

Search less, not more: Entering too many fields can hide the right record when a name, suffix, birth date or spelling differs from what the family expected.

Choose the problem you need to solve

The guide is organized around real actions rather than a directory of official pages.

Live lookup workflow

How to run a DeKalb County jail inmate search

The current jail search is a web application. It will not work correctly when JavaScript or cookies are blocked, and an outdated browser can also cause a blank or unsupported-browser screen.

Open the Tyler Jail Search Use the live DeKalb County Jail Search. Allow JavaScript and cookies if the application displays a browser warning.
Begin with the least restrictive identifier Enter the last name first when that is all you have. When you know the booking, SO or inmate identifier, use that instead of experimenting with several spellings.
Add one identifying detail Narrow a large result list with the first name, date of birth or another available identifier. Avoid filling every optional field at once.
Try name variations Test a maiden name, hyphenated surname, compound surname, suffix, nickname or omitted middle name. Booking staff may enter the legal name differently from the name used socially.
Open the likely record and compare details Check the booking number, SO number, birth date, booking date, charge, bond and case information before deciding that the result belongs to the correct person.
Save the booking and case identifiers Write down or securely save every booking, SO and case number. A single arrest may have more than one charge or court case.
Confirm live custody before taking action Call 404-298-8145 when the booking is recent, release appears pending, the housing location is unclear or you are about to travel or pay money.

How to understand a DeKalb County booking result

A jail record describes custody operations. A court record describes the legal case. Do not expect every field to mean the same thing or update at the same moment.

Common inmate-search fields and the next action
Field What it usually means What the family should do
Booking number Identifier for the current booking event. Use it for jail calls, record checks and service accounts when requested.
SO number Sheriff’s Office person or subject identifier. Keep it with the booking number to prevent same-name mistakes.
Booking date When the person entered the county booking process. Compare it with the known arrest time and distinguish a current booking from an older case.
Charge Allegation associated with the booking or case. Check Tyler Smart Search for later filings, status changes and court information.
Bond The amount or status currently connected with a charge or case. Verify every case and hold with the bonding office before paying.
Case number The number used in the judicial information system. Use Smart Search and Search Hearings to find the court, docket and hearing.
Housing or location The current internal assignment, when displayed. Call before arranging a visit because classification or medical needs can change housing.
Released or transferred County custody may have ended or moved to another authority. Ask for the release time or receiving agency; do not assume the person is physically available for pickup.
Presumption of innocence: A listed charge is an accusation. It may be amended, dismissed, reduced or resolved later. Use the court record for the current case status rather than treating the jail entry as a final judgment.
No-result decision path

What to do when the DeKalb County inmate search returns nothing

The arrest was very recent Identification, medical screening, inventory and transfer to the county jail may still be underway. Retry later and call the arresting agency or jail hotline.
The portal displays a blank page Enable JavaScript and cookies, use a current browser, disable aggressive script blocking for the portal and reopen the Jail Search page.
The name may be different Search only the last name, then try maiden, hyphenated, compound or former surnames and remove the middle name or suffix.
A city police agency made the arrest The person may still be at a municipal holding location or awaiting transport to DeKalb County Jail.
The record appeared and then disappeared The person may have bonded out, completed release, transferred, entered state or federal custody, or moved to another county.
A case exists but no custody record appears The person may be out of custody. Search the judicial case portal and hearing calendar instead of the jail system.

Useful jail-information call script “I am trying to confirm whether [full legal name], date of birth [date], is currently in DeKalb County custody. The arrest may have occurred on [date] through [agency]. I have [booking, SO or case number, if available]. Can you confirm whether booking is complete, whether the person was released, or which agency now has custody?”

What happens after an arrest in DeKalb County?

Arresting-agency custody The city or county police department completes its arrest paperwork and may hold the person temporarily before transport.
County booking and identity checks The jail records identity, charges, property, money, medical and classification information. The public portal may lag while this work is completed.
Housing and services assignment Jail staff assign housing and provide access to housing-unit monitors for medical appointments, grievances, commissary and service information.
First appearance and bond review Misdemeanor first appearances are published for 9:30 a.m. daily; felony first appearances are published for 1:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Bond, pretrial monitoring or continued custody The judge may address bond and release conditions. Pretrial Services may interview eligible defendants, verify background information and recommend conditions.
Release, court movement or transfer The person may post bond, receive release conditions, remain pending court, or transfer to another county, state or federal authority.
Why the portal changes: Booking, court and housing systems do not always update simultaneously. A name can appear before all charges, bond amounts or hearing details are complete.

DeKalb County bond choices
Bond method What the county accepts or requires Important risk or cost
Cash bond Full face value plus required penalties. Accepted instruments include cashier’s checks, traveler’s checks, U.S. Postal Service or Western Union money orders, and U.S. currency. Personal checks are not accepted. The surety must follow the refund process after the case is settled.
Professional bonding company Use a company authorized to operate in DeKalb County. The Sheriff’s Office posts the approved list but does not recommend one company. The company may charge 12% for bonds of $10,000 or less and 15% for bonds over $10,000; the fee is generally nonrefundable.
Property bond All deed owners must generally appear unless a valid power of attorney applies. Bring identification, certified deed, current tax statement and recent mortgage proof or cancellation. Property bonds under $10,000 generally do not create a lien; bonds of $10,000 or more generally do. Additional filing and release steps apply.

Property-bond document checklist

All owners named on the deed, unless represented by valid power of attorney
Probate or estate papers when a listed owner is deceased
Current state driver’s license or identification
Certified copy of the property deed
Current property-tax statement
Recent mortgage statement or proof the mortgage was cancelled
Property-bond cash fees: The Sheriff’s published procedure lists a $20 property-bond form fee and a $7.50 property affidavit fee.

Do these checks before paying any bond

Verify the exact defendant and booking Use the full legal name, date of birth, booking number and case number.
Ask about every charge and hold One payable bond does not clear a separate no-bond case, warrant, probation matter or outside-agency hold.
Confirm the payment instrument Call 404-298-8195 before buying a cashier’s check or money order so the payee, amount and required proof are correct.
Keep the bond receipt The white receipt copy and valid ID are important for a later cash-bond refund.
Confirm release separately Posting bond starts release processing; it does not prove that the person has physically left the jail.
Money-safety rule: The Sheriff does not recommend a particular bonding company. Do not pay an unexpected caller by gift card, cryptocurrency, peer-to-peer app or wire transfer. Independently call the official bonding office.

How a cash-bond surety requests a refund

After the criminal case is settled, the surety—not another family member—must generally appear in person at the Civil Process Unit, Courthouse Room B110, 556 N. McDonough Street, during weekday business hours.

Valid state-issued identification

How to use Tyler Smart Search

Search by case number when available Enter the record number. For a wildcard case-number search, the portal requires at least four characters.
Format a name correctly Use “Last, First Middle Suffix.” For a wildcard name search, use at least three last-name characters followed by an asterisk and at least one first-name character followed by an asterisk.
Use advanced filters only when needed Available filters include location, party type, date of birth, gender, ethnicity, phone, FBI number, SO number, booking number, case type, status, filing dates and judicial officer.
Open Search Hearings for the calendar Filter by all courts, State/Magistrate or Superior Court; then use case number, party, attorney, judge, courtroom and date range.

Pretrial Services: conditional release and supervision

Pretrial Services interviews jailed defendants, verifies personal information, checks criminal history and gives the court background information and possible release-condition recommendations. It also monitors defendants released on felony and misdemeanor bonds.

How an inmate can request review

The inmate may submit an inmate request form asking for a conditional-release interview. Pretrial then investigates family and community ties, criminal background and flight risk.

What release may require

A defendant may be released on recognizance or still be required to post bond, report regularly and comply with individualized conditions. Violations can lead to bond revocation.

Current ViaPath rules

DeKalb County Jail remote visitation: cost, schedule and restrictions

The Sheriff currently uses ViaPath for online video visits. Friends and family do not have on-site video visitation at this time; remote visits are the normal family option unless jail staff arrange a special accommodation.

Cost

$0.19 per minute.

A 30-minute visit costs about $5.70 before any applicable account or transaction charges.

Frequency

Three remote visits per inmate each week.

Length

30 minutes per remote visit.

Advance booking

Schedule online at least 24 hours ahead. Telephone scheduling is not available.

Morning block

8:00 a.m.–11:30 a.m. daily.

Evening block

4:00 p.m.–9:20 p.m. daily.

Confirm visitor approval The visitor must be on the inmate’s approved visitation list for at-home remote service.
Create the ViaPath visit account Register using the same legal identity shown on the visitor’s identification and maintain accurate contact details.
Choose an available appointment Schedule at least 24 hours in advance within the published morning or evening blocks.
Test the device and connection Use an internet-enabled computer, library device, office computer or smartphone with working camera, microphone and stable connection.
Join from an appropriate location Dress appropriately, keep prohibited persons or content away from the camera and follow staff instructions.
Who may not receive normal visits: The Sheriff’s current page states that maximum-security or mental-health inmates cannot have visitors. Housing, lockdown, discipline or operational needs can also affect availability.
Privacy warning: Family visits are recorded and electronically monitored. Attorney and clergy visits are treated differently under the published rules.
Do not fund the wrong account

Phone, video, tablet, messaging and commissary accounts explained

DeKalb changed to ViaPath in January 2026. Old-vendor balances did not transfer. The current funding flyer separates several accounts that are not interchangeable.

Housing-unit telephone rate: The Sheriff currently lists coinless inmate telephone calls at $0.10 per minute, while calls used to reach legal services are available without cost. The outside user may still need the correct ViaPath account and should review any separate account or payment charges.
Which DeKalb inmate account pays for which service?
Account Whose balance is it? What it pays for Common mistake
AdvancePay Phone Linked to the outside user’s account, phone number or email. Phone and available video services. Depositing here when the inmate needs commissary funds.
PIN Debit Held for the inmate’s secure use. Phone and video services selected by the inmate. Assuming it is the same as the tablet or trust account.
Incarcerated Person Tablet Inmate tablet-services balance. Messaging, music, games and other approved entertainment. Using it for commissary food or hygiene items.
My Messaging Linked to the outside user’s account. Messages, photographs and electronic cards. Confusing messages with phone-call credit.
GTLVisitMe Visit-scheduling or payment function. Scheduling and funding remote video visits. Using the visit portal for trust or commissary.
TouchPay Trust/Commissary Inmate trust and commissary balance. Approved commissary purchases and inmate-account needs. Expecting the deposit to create phone or messaging credit.

How to add DeKalb County inmate trust or commissary money

Use TouchPay Trust/Commissary—not a phone, messaging or tablet account—when the purpose is commissary or the inmate’s general trust balance.

Verify the current inmate Confirm the person in the jail lookup and copy the inmate ID and date of birth.
Select Trust/Commissary Do not select AdvancePay, PIN Debit, tablet or messaging unless that separate service is your actual goal.
Review the recipient before paying Compare the displayed name and identifier to the official jail record.
Check the service charge Automated deposits include a fee. Review the deposit amount and total charge separately.
Save the receipt Keep the confirmation number, transaction time, amount and account type in case the money does not post correctly.

What the jail provides and what commissary adds

Basic jail support

Inmates receive three freshly prepared meals daily, approved medical or religious diets, a hygiene kit, shoes, clothing, laundry and replacement clothing when needed.

Optional purchases

Commissary can provide approved additional food, personal items and games. Personal accounts are established at intake, and the Sheriff states that remaining balances are refunded upon release.

DeKalb County Jail mailing address and current delivery rules

Personal mail format
DeKalb County Jail, GA
Inmate Full Name, Inmate Identifier
P.O. Box 247
Phoenix, MD 21131
Sender information

Include the sender’s full name and physical return address. Use the complete facility name without abbreviations.

What can go to Phoenix: Personal letters, pictures and drawings that comply with jail content rules. The material is digitally delivered to the inmate’s tablet.
Do not send these to Phoenix: Checks, money orders or attorney-client privileged mail. Those items require the jail’s separate instructions and should not enter the personal digital-mail stream.

Mail-preparation checklist

Write the facility as “DeKalb County Jail, GA”
Use the inmate’s full legal name
Add the inmate identifier exactly
Include the sender’s full physical address
Send only permitted personal letters, pictures or drawings
Keep a copy of important correspondence before mailing
Outdated-instruction warning: Older DeKalb Sheriff material may still describe postcard-only mail. The newer 2026 ViaPath notice moves personal correspondence to the Phoenix digital-processing address. Use the current digital format unless the jail directly gives a newer instruction.

Inmate property, emergency pickup, eyeglasses and medication

Emergency property pickup

The Sheriff’s support information says property pickup should occur within the first seven days after the inmate signs a release. Published pickup hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.

Ask the inmate to authorize release Property cannot simply be collected because a family member appears at the jail.
Call before traveling Use 404-298-8145 to confirm the current property desk, entrance and identification requirements.
Bring valid photo identification The name should match the person authorized by the inmate.
Go within the published window Use the first-seven-day and weekday 7 a.m.–2 p.m. guidance unless jail staff give a different instruction.
Address caution: Some older support text displays the headquarters address. Current Jail Services Operations is listed at 4425 Memorial Drive. Call before arrival to confirm the exact property-release entrance.

Medical and personal items

Prescription medication

Do not hand medicine directly to the inmate. Call the jail to ask how approved medication must be transferred to medical staff.

Eyeglasses, contacts or dentures

Call ahead for the current acceptance location, packaging and approval process; medical or security staff may inspect all items.

Money held at intake

Personal commissary accounts are established at intake, and the Sheriff states that remaining account balances are refunded on release.

Clothing and ordinary property

Do not bring unrequested clothing, shoes, electronics or personal items. Jail security rules control what can enter the facility.

Health, grievances and complaints

How inmates request medical care or report a problem

Medical care

The jail publishes medical, dental, mental-health, prescribed-drug and nutritional-supplement services, intake screening, chronic-care planning and in-house dialysis.

Confidential request

Inmates can request health services through housing-unit electronic monitors and in writing.

Special diets

Medical or religious diets are available after approval.

Housing-unit monitor functions

Make a medical appointment
File an inmate grievance
Access jail service information
Order commissary and other available services
Emergency health or safety concern: The inmate should immediately alert a detention officer. A person outside the jail facing an active emergency should call 911; email and routine grievance channels are not emergency services.

Complaint about an agency employee

The Office of Professional Standards investigates complaints or allegations of employee or agency misconduct. A member of the public may call, email, use the Sheriff’s comment form or visit the Executive Offices without an appointment during published weekday hours.

What to include in a useful complaint Date, time, exact location, employee name or description, witness information, booking or incident number, what happened, what response was requested and copies of supporting documents. Keep the language factual and separate direct observations from assumptions.

Recreation, legal research, education and re-entry programs

Daily recreation

The Sheriff states that inmates are offered one hour of recreation daily, including supervised open-air basketball and physical exercise.

Library and legal research

The jail library provides reading material, forms, legal documents and assistance with legal research; a lending cart visits housing units daily.

Options for Living & Learning

Eight-week classes may include yoga, chess, poetry, short-story writing, Thinking for a Change, art and music appreciation.

START Program

A free 90-day program for qualifying inmates with felony drug-abuse charges or repeat-offense histories, including HIV-risk education, GED and life skills.

Substance-use support

Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous volunteers conduct addiction programs.

Vocational education

Intermittent 10-week Goodwill training has included electrician’s helper, HVAC, commercial maintenance, resumes, interviews and budgeting.

GED and adult education

Georgia Piedmont Technical College provides weekly GED and Adult Basic Education; the Sheriff’s Office covers GED testing costs.

Chaplaincy

Volunteer chaplains representing diverse faiths provide spiritual, motivational and emotional support.

Workforce and work release

Qualifying inmates may perform approved jail labor; court-ordered work release may allow certain employed inmates to work while residing at the jail.

How to ask: Program eligibility depends on charge, sentence, custody level, court order, housing, health and program availability. The inmate should use the housing-unit service request process rather than assume enrollment is automatic.

Release, transfer and pickup: avoid the most common mistake

A paid bond, completed court hearing or disappearing online record does not always mean the person is ready at the front door.

Bond was accepted Release still requires verification, paperwork, housing movement and return of property.
Another hold exists A separate case, warrant, probation matter or outside jurisdiction may keep the person in custody.
The record shows release Call the jail for the actual release time before arranging pickup.
The record is no longer visible Ask whether the person was released or transferred and which agency received custody.
Pretrial conditions apply The person may have reporting, location, treatment, contact or other judge-specific conditions.
Property or account balance remains Ask how personal property and remaining trust-account funds are returned.
Confirm physical release by phone
Ask which exit or pickup location is used
Bring appropriate clothing and transportation
Keep the person’s phone and housing plan flexible
Review every court and pretrial condition
Save bond, release and property receipts
Records, booking photos and notifications

How to request records or monitor custody changes

Open Records Act requests

The Sheriff’s online request system is the correct action path for documents or booking-photo requests. The public-information office states that general public questions should go to the main office rather than the media-only contact.

Booking-photo restriction: The Sheriff states that current inmate booking photos are available to news organizations that have signed a Booking Photo Use Agreement as required by Georgia law. A public request does not automatically guarantee unrestricted access or publication rights.

Prepare a focused records request

Inmate full name and current booking number

Safety use: VINE can supplement a safety plan with available custody notifications, but automated alerts should never replace 911 or direct coordination with victim services when danger is immediate.

Local DeKalb tips that prevent wasted trips and wrong payments

Use the jail address, not headquarters

Jail Services is 4425 Memorial Drive; executive offices are 4415 Memorial Drive.

Check the arresting city

DeKalb contains several municipal police departments. A very recent arrestee may not yet be in county booking.

Save the SO and booking numbers

They reduce errors across the jail, Tyler court system and ViaPath accounts.

Choose the right money account

Trust/commissary, phone, PIN Debit, tablet, messages and video visits are separate balances.

Use the new digital mail address

Do not rely on older postcard-only instructions still visible in legacy jail content.

Schedule visits online

Remote visits require 24-hour advance scheduling; the jail does not schedule them by phone.

Do not buy a bond instrument too early

Call the bonding office first to confirm the amount, payee and acceptable document.

First appearance is not a trial

It covers rights, charges and bond—not guilt or dismissal.

Confirm physical release

A posted bond or changed portal status does not guarantee the person is ready for pickup.

Live actions that must be completed on an external system
