Hays County, Texas Jail Search Guide 2026
Find a Hays County Jail Inmate, Booking Record, Bond and Release Status
Search someone booked in San Marcos or elsewhere in Hays County, then use the jail record to check bond, magistration, court information, visitation, commissary, phone service, mail rules and whether the person remains in custody.
Hays County’s public records system separates Jail Records, Jail Bond Records, criminal cases and court calendars. The fastest route is to identify the inmate first, save the Sheriff’s personal identification number when available, then move to the specific bond, court or family-service task you need.

Six Common Hays County Jail Tasks
Find someone recently arrested
Search the public Jail Records database. If the arrest was very recent, allow time for transport, fingerprinting, photographs and booking.
Check a bond
Use Jail Bond Records and confirm the current amount, bond type and whether another case or hold may affect release.
Find a court date
The jail does not track court dates. Use the criminal case or court-calendar system and the correct Clerk’s office.
Schedule a visit
On-site visits require an appointment. Remote Securus video visits are available during a much broader daily window.
Send money or commissary
Choose between the inmate Trust Fund, Access Corrections deposits and Access Securepak orders.
Confirm release
Hays County states that once a person no longer appears on the inmate-search roster, they have been released from county custody.

How to Search Hays County Jail Records
The county’s Odyssey public-access system combines several record categories in one interface. For custody information, select Jail Records rather than Criminal Case Records or the general civil database.
Select “Jail Records.”
The landing page also contains Criminal Case Records, Civil/Family/Probate records, Court Calendar and Jail Bond Records. Choose the jail option first when you are trying to determine custody.
Search the person’s legal name.
Begin with a surname and then add the first name. Avoid adding extra middle names or punctuation until you know how the booking record is formatted.
Open every plausible match.
Common names can return several records. Use booking details and available identifiers instead of selecting a person only because the name looks familiar.
Record the inmate identifier.
When the Sheriff’s personal identification number—often called the SPIN—is available, save it. Hays County uses this identifier in several jail-service workflows.
Review booking, charge and bond information separately.
An arrest record, bond entry and court case answer different questions. Do not assume one screen contains the entire case history.
Check the search again before traveling or paying.
Custody and bond information can change after magistration, bond posting, transfer or release.
Best search order: exact legal name → booking record → SPIN or jail identifier → bond record → criminal case → court calendar.
Six Things to Match Before You Use a Jail Record
Full name
Check spelling carefully.
Booking
Confirm the current event.
SPIN
Save the inmate identifier.
Charge
Read each listed offense.
Bond
Confirm type and amount.
Status
Recheck before acting.
Name-only warning: Do not send money, order commissary or discuss a bond until you are confident the jail record belongs to the correct person.
What Happens After Someone Is Taken to Hays County Jail?
Hays County explains that a newly arrested person must be processed before the jail record and release options become clear.
1
Arrival
The arrested person is brought into the jail and enters the booking queue.
2
Search & paperwork
Staff complete the arrest report and intake procedures.
3
Fingerprint & photo
Identification records and booking photographs are created.
4
Holding
The individual waits for magistration. Timing depends partly on the judge’s schedule.
5
Magistration
A magistrate explains the charges and rights and determines bail conditions.
Why a recent arrest may not appear immediately: Booking time depends on the number of people being processed, cooperation, intoxication or medical issues and other intake conditions.
“I am trying to determine whether __________ has completed booking at Hays County Jail. The arrest may have occurred around __________. Can you tell me whether I should continue checking Jail Records or whether the person is already in the booking system?”
Cash, Surety and Personal Bonds in Hays County
$
Cash Bond
The required dollar amount is deposited as security that the defendant will appear in court. Hays County provides an online cash-bond payment route for supported debit or credit card payments.
B
Surety Bond
A licensed bail-bond company posts the bond. Hays County is a Bail Bond Board county, so companies issuing bonds for Hays County charges must be properly licensed.
P
Personal Bond
The defendant signs an agreement to appear without depositing the full bond amount. Eligibility depends on the court and case.
How to Verify a Bond Before Paying
Match the defendant.
Use the legal name and jail identifiers rather than relying on a verbal amount from another person.
Check every charge and case.
One arrest can contain several offenses, and separate cases or holds can prevent immediate release.
Use the correct payment route.
For supported card-funded cash bonds, start from the county’s
official payment page and select Cash Bond Payment.
Save the receipt.
Keep the defendant name, amount, transaction details and time of payment.
No guaranteed release time: Hays County says bonds are processed in the order received and staff cannot give a specific release time because multiple factors affect the process.
How to Tell Whether Someone Has Been Released
Check the inmate search again
Hays County states that once the person no longer appears on the inmate-search roster, the individual has been released from county custody.
Do not judge by bond payment alone
Release processing continues after a bond is posted. Staff must verify paperwork, other cases and custody requirements.
Recheck the court record
Court orders, additional cases and later hearings may explain why custody status changed.
Releases run 24 hours a day. There is no fixed “release hour,” so use the live inmate search rather than assuming someone will leave at a particular time.
The Jail Does Not Assign or Track Court Dates
For a hearing date, use the court record—not the Corrections Bureau. Hays County routes felony and misdemeanor questions to different Clerk offices.
County Court jail docket: Hays County Courts at Law publish a jail docket on Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. for matters within their jurisdiction. A specific defendant’s court record should still be checked for the controlling hearing information.

No commissary refunds: Confirm the inmate remains in custody before placing an order whenever release or transfer may be close.
How to Pick Up an Inmate’s Personal Property
The inmate completes a property-release card.
The request must identify the person authorized to receive the property.
Allow at least 24 hours.
Hays County requires the release card to be completed at least 24 hours before pickup.
Go during the published pickup window.
Personal property may be picked up from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, except county or federally approved holidays.
Bring state-issued identification.
The recipient named by the inmate must prove identity before the jail releases property.
Transferred inmate: If someone is transferred and cannot take property, the inmate should arrange pickup. The county warns that property left without arrangements for 30 days may be destroyed or donated to the indigent.
Register for Release and Custody Notifications
Families may check the public jail roster manually. Victims and others who need a custody notification can use Hays County’s victim-notification service instead of repeatedly refreshing the jail search.
IVSS notification service
Provides basic jail custody information and can notify registered users before a suspect is released.
Registration phone
866-268-8959
Published as available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in English and Spanish.
Service outage: If the notification system is temporarily unavailable, Hays County instructs users to contact the jail directly at
512-393-7800.
A useful record most jail guides ignore
Use the Hays County Jail Population Dashboard for Context
The county publishes a separate interactive dashboard updated daily. It is not a substitute for an individual inmate search, but it helps explain where the broader jail population is being housed and how bookings are changing.
Current population
Review the daily number of people represented in the county jail reporting system.
Contracted facilities
Hays County reports people housed outside the primary county jail when contracted capacity is used.
Bookings
Use the dashboard to study booking activity and historical patterns rather than identifying one specific inmate.
Common charges
Interactive charts allow users to explore frequently represented charge categories.
Open the official Hays County Jail Population Dashboard.
Important distinction: The dashboard includes inmates physically present in Hays County as well as people represented in contracted-facility and ICE-related reporting. Use Jail Records to determine an individual’s current record.

Search Jail Records first. If the booking has not appeared, allow intake time before calling the jail repeatedly.
Parent trying to pay a bond
Search Jail Bond Records, confirm all cases and call the bonding line before sending money.
Employer verifying a rumor

Family member looking for court date
Move from Jail Records to Criminal Case Records or Court Calendar. Do not call visitation for court scheduling.
Victim waiting for release
Register for IVSS notifications instead of relying solely on periodic manual searches.
Friend sending a letter

Family sending commissary money

Do not arrive without an appointment for on-site visitation. Call 512-393-7366 and verify the schedule first.
