The arresting agency and the jail operator are not necessarily the same organization. San Jose Police may arrest a person inside the city, but custody and booking information is handled through Santa Clara County’s correctional system.

How to run a San Jose jail inmate search
Santa Clara County’s inmate-search entry page now routes users into the Sheriff’s current inmate-search system. The most reliable search method depends on what information you already have.
Use the Booking Number, also called the CEN. This identifies the particular county booking and is useful for deposits and jail-service questions.
Use the Personal File Number. A PFN stays associated with the person across separate Santa Clara County bookings.
Use the person’s legal name with the additional identifying information required by the live search, such as date of birth or booking date.

Administrative booking formally records an arrest in the county custody system. This is why there can be a gap between the moment San Jose Police makes an arrest and the point when a complete county inmate record is available.

How Santa Clara County jail bail works
The Sheriff’s Administrative Booking page states that, when an arrestee is eligible for bail, the public can use a cash bond or a licensed bail-bond agency. The Sheriff’s Office does not refer customers to a particular bail agency.

What happens to cash bail later?
Santa Clara County states that the defendant must complete all court proceedings before the posted cash-bail amount is returned. The court generally takes about 4 to 6 weeks after the proceedings are completed to mail the refund check. If the defendant fails to complete required court proceedings, the bail money may be forfeited.

Step 1: get approved before choosing a visit
Registration is available through the Sheriff’s current OVR process. The Main Jail page states that approval can take up to seven business days. A valid email address is strongly recommended because approval status is sent electronically.

Main Jail visit limits
The Main Jail page states that inmates may have two 60-minute visits per week.
Up to two adults may visit. The published rules state each adult receives a 30-minute portion.
Visitors must check in 30 minutes before the scheduled Main Jail visit.

Children
Children must be biologically related to the adult visitor or the incarcerated person. The Sheriff’s Main Jail rules require an original and/or notarized birth certificate for each child at each visit. A child age 18 or older counts as an adult and must have an approved OVR account.

Visitor applications that may be denied
Main Jail approval can be affected if the visitor was recently in county custody, has an open court case, is on probation or parole, has an active warrant, is currently out on bail, has a relevant restraining order or has certain criminal-history issues.
Elmwood visitation rules after a Main Jail transfer
A San Jose arrestee can later be housed at Elmwood in Milpitas. Do not continue using Main Jail visiting times after the inmate record shows Elmwood.
Core Elmwood visiting rules
Only registered and approved visitors may schedule a visit.
Up to two 30-minute visits per week and one visit per day, space permitting.
Up to two adults may share the same scheduled visit.
Online visits must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance.
Visits may be scheduled up to 21 days ahead when slots are available.

Elmwood Women
Women’s visiting times are tied closely to the housing unit. The Sheriff’s published schedule uses housing designations such as W2A, W2B, W2C, W4A, W4B and W4C across morning, afternoon and evening periods. Check the inmate’s current housing assignment in the OVR system rather than choosing a time from memory.
Children at Elmwood
Children must be the child of the incarcerated person or the child of the visitor. An original birth certificate is required for each child at each visit; a court order establishing legal guardianship can substitute for the birth certificate.

Families may also purchase pre-selected gift packs through iCare. The county says the available bundles use products also sold in inmate commissary, although not every inmate-store item is necessarily available as a family gift pack.
What commissary money can be used for
Santa Clara County lists common commissary categories rather than treating the account as unrestricted spending money.
Approved food and snack items sold through the jail commissary.

Commissary money after release: refunds and missing balances
Santa Clara County has a specific refund procedure for a former inmate who did not receive the full commissary-account balance at release.
The county says released persons are given up to $20 in cash from the commissary account.
Any remaining eligible account balance is issued by check.
Refund requests generally take 3–4 working days, excluding weekends and holidays.
Why a released person may be missing money
- A commissary purchase was placed before release but the vendor had not yet returned the money for an undelivered order.
- A family deposit posted after the person had already been released.
- The person was cited and released before being housed, but confiscated money had already been forwarded into the fiscal process.
- The original refund check was lost.

Santa Clara County’s Main Jail description confirms that housing-unit day rooms include telephones, and county policies address inmate telephone monitoring. The Sheriff’s public pages do not currently present a single consumer-facing rate sheet for inmate calls in the same clear format used for commissary deposits, so this guide does not guess a phone vendor or rate.

Santa Clara County uses Edovo tablets for self-paced educational programming. Participants can request a unique code through the tablet that allows a family member or friend to retrieve completed course transcripts or certificates through Edovo.

For a newly booked person, the most direct source for the initial court date is Santa Clara County Administrative Booking at 408-299-2305. For scheduled criminal calendars, Santa Clara Superior Court publishes separate calendars by courthouse.

Santa Clara County warrant checks and self-surrender
Sheriff’s Records provides warrant information without a fee for warrants held by the Sheriff’s Office. For another person’s warrant check, staff can provide information about warrants held by their own office; a person checking their own warrant must show proper identification.
Bring identification. Records staff can perform a complete warrant check and explain available options for handling the warrant.
Provide the name and date of birth. Public information is limited to warrants held by the Sheriff’s Office.
