Allegheny County Jail Inmate Search & Roster 2026

Allegheny County, Pennsylvania · Pittsburgh jail & custody guide

Allegheny County Custody Lookup: Find an Inmate, Bail, Visits & Release Status

Searching Allegheny County Jail is different from many county-jail websites. The county does not currently provide a traditional public name-search roster on the main jail site. For live custody verification, use Pennsylvania SAVIN/VINELink or call the jail directly at 412-350-2000.

Once custody is confirmed, this guide explains the next steps in one place: how arraignment and bail work, where bond is posted, how visitation registration works, how to get the DOC number, how to send money and mail, what the 48-hour release rule means, who to call about medical concerns, how property pickup works and where to check the criminal docket.

Do not treat a search hit as proof of guilt. A jail admission or criminal charge reflects an accusation or custody event, not a conviction. Verify the person’s identity using name, date of birth, DOC number, docket number, arrest date or other independent identifiers before paying money or making decisions.

Fast answer

Use the right system for the question you are actually trying to answer

1
“Are they in jail right now?”

Start with PA SAVIN/VINELink, then call Allegheny County Jail at 412-350-2000 when immediate confirmation matters.

2
“What are the charges and court date?”

Use Pennsylvania’s Unified Judicial System docket search after you know the person’s name or docket information.

3
“How much is bail?”

Call County Municipal Court at 412-350-3240 or check the criminal docket. The Municipal Court line provides arraignment and bail information.

Important local distinction: Allegheny County Jail, the County Municipal Court, the Courthouse Bond Counter and Pennsylvania SAVIN are separate parts of the custody-to-court workflow. No single page answers every question.

Choose the task you need to complete

Primary intent

How to perform an Allegheny County jail inmate search in 2026

Unlike counties with a continuously browsable public roster, Allegheny County’s official jail website directs families toward jail contacts and victim-notification tools. The Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office also directs people looking for a prisoner to VINELink.

Collect the person’s identifying information Write down the full legal name, possible aliases, date of birth, approximate arrest date, arrest location and arresting police department if known.
Search Pennsylvania SAVIN / VINELink Use the statewide custody-information service to look for the person in participating Pennsylvania correctional facilities.
Compare multiple identifiers Do not identify someone solely by first and last name. Compare DOB or other available details.
Call Allegheny County Jail when custody must be confirmed Main Jail: 412-350-2000.
Ask for the housing location if needed The jail FAQ says the person’s pod/housing information can be obtained by calling the main jail number.
Obtain the DOC number The DOC number is important for inmate mail, trust-account payments and visitation check-in.
Move to the Pennsylvania court docket Once you have confirmed the identity, use the statewide court portal for charges, docket entries and hearing information.

Information to write down once you locate the person

Full legal name
DOC number
Date of birth
Arrest date
Arresting agency
Criminal docket number
Current bail amount/type
Next hearing date
Housing pod if visitation is planned
Any other holds preventing release
The DOC number matters more than many families expect. Allegheny County requires it on personal mail and trust-account deposits, and visitors need it when checking in for a scheduled visit.
Troubleshooting

No Allegheny County inmate found? Follow this order

The arrest was very recent The person may still be undergoing identification, medical clearance, pretrial screening or arraignment before the custody information you are checking is fully available.
The person may still be in pre-arraignment processing Allegheny County processes large numbers of arrestees through intake before final commitment to the jail.
The name may be different Try a maiden name, suffix, alternate spelling, hyphenated name or legal name rather than a nickname.
The person may have posted bail quickly Someone may be processed and released without remaining in county custody long enough for you to find them using the route you first checked.
The person may be in alternative housing Allegheny County uses programs and contracted alternative-housing providers in addition to the main jail.
The person may have transferred Call 412-350-2000 to ask whether the person was released or transferred and where they went when that information can be provided.
It may be a state-prison case Pennsylvania Department of Corrections custody is separate from Allegheny County Jail custody.
You may need the court docket instead If you are researching an old arrest or case rather than current custody, search Pennsylvania court records instead of a jail locator.
Useful call script “I am trying to confirm whether [full legal name], date of birth [DOB], is currently in Allegheny County Jail. The arrest may have happened around [date] in [municipality] through [agency]. Can you confirm current custody, the housing location if available, or whether the person was released or transferred?”
Arrest to housing

What happens after someone is brought to Allegheny County Jail?

Contraband search and medical clearance New arrestees are screened before placement in the facility so immediate medical needs and security concerns can be addressed.
Identification The person is formally identified as part of intake processing.
Pretrial interview Pretrial Services interviews the individual and provides information that may be used in the judge’s bail or detention decision.
Pre-arraignment review Allegheny County also uses Pre-Arraignment Diversion screening to identify people who may benefit from community-based services.
Preliminary arraignment A judge determines whether bail applies and whether the person will be released or committed to jail.
Further medical evaluation and classification A person remaining confined undergoes additional assessment before placement in an appropriate housing area.
Why a search may lag behind an arrest: The person can move through identification, medical screening, pretrial review and arraignment before final jail housing is assigned.

Initial phone access during intake

The jail’s intake guidance says a newly processed individual receives one free 30-second phone call after processing. Incoming personal calls to inmates are not accepted.

Release timing

Allegheny County Jail’s 48-hour release rule—and the bonded-inmate exception

A judge’s release order does not always mean someone walks out immediately. Allegheny County publishes a specific release-processing window.

Standard release

The jail has up to 48 hours to release an individual once authorization has been received and all charges and holds are cleared.

When the 48-hour clock begins

At midnight of the day the release order is sent to the jail by the Court or Magistrate.

Bonded-inmate exception: Individuals who have posted bond are typically released within approximately three hours after the jail receives the necessary documentation.

Before a person physically leaves

All charges and holds must be cleared
Medical needs and medications are reviewed
Personal property is reviewed
Cashier-account balance is reviewed
Discharge needs are assessed
Release paperwork must be processed

Discharge and Release Center

Allegheny County’s Discharge and Release Center helps people transition back into the community. Depending on need and eligibility, release support may include referrals and practical resources rather than simply sending the person out of the facility without planning.

BUS
Transportation support

Release planning may include bus-pass assistance.

MED
Medication continuity

Needed medication supply, prescriptions and follow-up referrals can be prepared through medical/discharge staff.

TEL
Phone access

Phone support can be part of the discharge process.

CLO
Clothing

Intake returns stored clothing and determines whether additional clothing is needed.

REF
Referrals

Community-service referrals can be provided during release planning.

$
Remaining funds

The cashier process returns qualifying remaining trust-account funds.
