McHenry County, Illinois Jail Records Guide 2026
Check the McHenry County Jail Roster, Custody Status and Court Details
McHenry County does not use a typical “type a name and press search” jail portal. The Sheriff publishes two generated inmate reports—one organized by name and another by confinement date—so you can locate a current adult county inmate, review available case information and check recent releases.
This guide explains exactly who appears in the roster, who does not, how to read the report, what to do after a release or transfer, how Illinois pretrial detention now works, and where to handle visits, calls, commissary, mail, VINE notifications, court records and Sheriff record requests.

The Inmate Search Is an Hourly Roster Report, Not a Search Box
On the Sheriff’s corrections page, “Inmate Search by Name” and “Inmate Search by Date” open generated roster reports. If you already know the person’s surname, the alphabetical report is usually fastest. If you are checking a recent arrest or trying to identify everyone booked around a particular time, use the date report.
Refresh before relying on the list: the Sheriff states that inmate lists are updated every hour. If an older report appears, refresh the browser and open the roster button again.
Choose the Jail Action You Need
Find a current inmate
Open the alphabetical report and locate the surname, or use the confinement-date report for a recent booking.
Check a recent release
The official roster can continue displaying people released within the previous three days.
Find a court date
Use the roster as a starting point, then confirm the case through the Circuit Clerk because court orders and schedules can change.
Schedule a jail visit
Register with ICSolutions, pre-schedule the visit and choose an available on-site or off-site video window.
Send money or mail
Use Access Corrections or the jail kiosk for funds, and include the inmate’s full name and jail ID on mailed correspondence.
Person no longer appears
Check the release window, court case, IDOC search, federal possibility or temporary-out status before assuming what happened.

Who Does—and Does Not—Appear on the McHenry County Jail Roster?
YES
Current adult county inmates
Current adult inmates with local McHenry County charges are included.
YES
Recent releases
People released within the previous three days may remain visible in the report.
NO
Federal detainees
Federal detainees are excluded from the public McHenry County inmate report.
NO
Juveniles
Anyone treated as a juvenile by the system is excluded from the public roster.
TEMP
Weekenders / temporarily out
These individuals may disappear while outside the facility and reappear after returning.
Federal-detainee exception: if you believe an adult is physically housed at the facility on federal charges but cannot find them in the roster, call the jail at
815-338-9396.
How to Search the McHenry County Jail Roster
Choose “Inmate Search by Name” for a known person.
This opens the alphabetically organized current roster.
Choose “Inmate Search by Date” for a recent arrest.
Use the date-organized report when you know approximately when the person entered custody.
Use your browser’s Find command.
On desktop press Ctrl+F or Command+F. On mobile use the browser menu and choose Find in Page when available.
Search the surname first.
Start with the last name rather than the entire full name so middle initials or formatting do not hide the result.
Match the correct person.
Compare date of birth, age, JCA number, confinement date and case information.
Read every case row.
A single inmate may have multiple charges or case numbers with different statuses or court dates.
Check whether the record says currently confined or released.
Recent releases may remain in the report for up to three days.
Confirm the report’s update time.
The generated roster displays a last-updated timestamp. Refresh if the report appears stale.
Verify urgent information separately.
Court dates, holds, release status and pretrial orders should be confirmed with the responsible office before traveling or taking legal action.
How to Read the McHenry County Inmate Report
| Roster Field |
What It Means |
What to Do With It |
| JCA # |
A jail/corrections identifier attached to the inmate record. |
Copy it before calling the jail or matching records. |
| Name |
The name under which the person appears in the corrections system. |
Compare spelling and middle initial with other records. |
| Date of birth / age |
Identity details useful when several people have similar names. |
Use these fields to avoid selecting the wrong person. |
| Date confined |
When the jail records the current period of confinement beginning. |
Compare it with the arrest or court timeline you know. |
| Charge |
The offense description associated with a case row. |
Remember that listed charges are allegations unless and until resolved in court. |
| Class |
The Illinois offense classification displayed for the charge. |
Use the case number for authoritative court status. |
| Case # |
The associated McHenry County court case identifier when shown. |
Copy it into the Circuit Clerk’s public case-information system. |
| Next court date / room |
The next court information currently shown in the jail feed. |
Verify through the Circuit Clerk before appearing. |
| Status |
May describe the current handling of a charge or sentence row. |
Do not interpret shorthand as a final court disposition without checking the case. |
| Release date |
A release date may appear for sentenced or recently released records where applicable. |
Treat future dates as subject to court, jail and custody changes. |
| Hold warning |
The report may indicate that another agency has a hold. |
Do not assume release from the McHenry case means immediate physical release. |
Presumption of innocence: a jail roster documents custody and case information. It does not establish guilt.
Six Things to Match Before Using an Inmate Record
Name
Confirm spelling.
Date of birth
Separate similar names.
JCA #
Copy the identifier.
Confined date
Match the arrest timeline.
Case #
Connect to court.
Custody line
Check confined or released.
Do this before sending money: verify the inmate’s identity and current custody directly from the roster or jail. Similar names are not enough.
Why Someone May Not Appear in the McHenry County Inmate Search
Federal charges
Federal detainees are specifically excluded from the public Sheriff roster even if you believe the person is housed locally.
Juvenile case
Juveniles are excluded from the adult public inmate report.
Temporary absence
A weekender or person temporarily outside the facility may not appear until returning.
Recent release
The roster displays releases for only a short recent period. An older release will disappear.
IDOC transfer
A person sentenced to state custody should be checked through the Illinois Department of Corrections search.
Update timing
Refresh the roster. The Sheriff says the lists are generated hourly, but the browser may still show an older cached copy.
“I am trying to verify whether __________ is currently housed in the McHenry County Correctional Facility. The person’s date of birth is __________ and I cannot locate them on the public roster. Can you confirm the correct custody-search route?”
From Arrest to Release or State Transfer
Arrest / Booking
Corrections receives and processes the person.
Roster
Eligible local adult custody appears in the hourly report.
Pretrial Court
A judge addresses release, detention and case scheduling.
County Outcome
Release, dismissal, county sentence or another disposition may follow.
IDOC Transfer
A state-prison sentence moves the search to the Illinois corrections system.
County-jail sentence limit: the Sheriff states that a sentenced person can be detained in the county facility for up to 364 days. Longer state sentences are served through the Illinois Department of Corrections.
Important Illinois rule
Illinois Ended Cash Bail—Do Not Rely on Old “Post Bond” Instructions
Illinois eliminated cash bail on September 18, 2023. For current criminal cases, judges use the state’s pretrial release and detention framework rather than the old system in which a defendant ordinarily paid a percentage of a cash bond to leave custody.
“No Bond At This Time” on a roster
Treat this as a jail-report field, not as a complete explanation of the person’s current legal release eligibility.
Old or unusual bond information
Older cases, warrants or other circumstances can produce legacy bond language. Confirm the specific case through the Circuit Clerk or jail.
Current pretrial question
Check the court docket and the judge’s latest release or detention order. The court—not an old generic county FAQ—controls.
Avoid outdated guidance: older McHenry County webpages may still describe cash-bond payment procedures. For a 2026 arrest, use the current court record and jail confirmation.
For statewide context, review the
Illinois Courts Pretrial Information and Data.
How to Verify a McHenry County Criminal Court Case
The jail roster can show a case number, status, next court date and courtroom, but the Circuit Clerk maintains the official court record.
Copy the case number from the roster.
Include the full year and case-type letters rather than searching only by name.
Select public access to court records.
Use the free public case-information route for basic publicly accessible information.
Match the defendant and case number.
Check filing information and event history before assuming a similarly named case belongs to the inmate.
Review scheduled events.
Verify the date, time, courtroom and reason for the next event.
Check the newest minute or order information available.
This is especially important for release, detention, continuance or sentencing questions.
Use the courthouse public terminals for fuller public access when needed.
Publicly available cases can also be reviewed at the Michael J. Sullivan Judicial Center.

- Log in at the visitation kiosk at the scheduled time
- Limit on-site visit to two visitors
- Visitor age 17+ or accompanied by an adult
- Adult should bring valid picture ID
- Keep children directly supervised
- Wear appropriate, socially accepted attire
No automatic jail refund: the facility states it does not issue visitation refunds. Contact the video-visitation provider when a refund question arises.
How McHenry County Inmate Phone Accounts Work
1
Confirm inmate
Verify current custody and the correct person before funding communications.
2
Create ICSolutions account
Register through the vendor’s official website.
3
Add prepaid service
Follow the vendor’s current pricing and account instructions.
4
Resolve technical issues
Contact ICSolutions directly at 1-888-506-8407.
Do not publish a fixed call price unless checking the live vendor rate: communication fees can change, so review the price presented by ICSolutions before purchasing.
Three Ways to Send Commissary Funds
2. Jail lobby kiosk
The front-lobby kiosk accepts cash or credit card according to the Sheriff’s current instructions.
3. Money order
Make it payable to McHenry County Jail and place the inmate’s name and commissary account number in the memo field.
Money-order timing: the Sheriff warns that processing a mailed money order can take up to one week. Use the online or kiosk route when timing matters.
Before Sending Funds
- Verify the inmate is still at McHenry County
- Confirm the correct inmate name
- Obtain the correct ID/account information
- Review vendor fees before submitting
- Save the confirmation number or receipt
- Do not send ordinary cash through inmate mail
McHenry County Jail Mail Address and Acceptance Rules
Address mail exactly:
Inmate’s Full Name, Jail ID# ________
McHenry County Jail
2200 N. Seminary Avenue
Woodstock, IL 60098
Mail must enter through the U.S. Postal Service and cannot simply be dropped off for an inmate. The sender’s name and return address must be clearly shown.
Usually acceptable within jail rules
- Ordinary letters on appropriate paper
- Cards without prohibited ornamentation
- Up to 10 permitted photographs per envelope
- Photos generally no larger than 4×6 unless printed on a normal sheet
- Proper sender name and return address
Do not include
- Glitter, perfume or lipstick
- Musical or ornamented cards
- Plastic, wood, metal, cloth, ribbon or cord
- Glue, adhesives, paint, crayons or colored pencil
- Blank paper, stamps or envelopes
- Polaroid photographs
- Prohibited sexual, drug, gang or weapon content
If prohibited material is included: the Sheriff states the entire letter and contents may be returned to the sender.
Incoming and outgoing mail ordinarily is not processed on weekends or holidays. The jail also prohibits inmate-to-inmate correspondence, including attempts to route the message through an outside third party.
Do Not Send a Book Until the Title Is Pre-Approved
Books, magazines and periodicals require advance approval from the jail’s Mail Officer. The Sheriff provides a book, magazine and periodical pre-approval form on the corrections information page.
Must come from publisher
Incoming approved publication material must be sent directly from the publisher.
No hardcovers or fasteners
Hardcovers, staples and similar fasteners are prohibited.
Content review still applies
Pre-approval does not prevent later rejection if the actual item violates jail content rules.
Books become a donation: the Sheriff states accepted books are stamped McHenry County Jail and later donated to the Corrections Library after the inmate has an opportunity to read them; they are not placed into the inmate’s personal property.
Unauthorized publications can be picked up at the Correctional Facility Monday–Friday from 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., excluding holidays, or returned using a provided shipping label. The Sheriff states items not handled within 60 days may be destroyed.
Get Release, Transfer or Custody Alerts Through Illinois VINE
Checking the roster manually is useful for a one-time lookup. If an offender’s custody change affects your safety or planning, VINE is the better tool because it can send notifications when registered status changes occur.
Useful for victims and families: VINE operates around the clock and reduces the need to repeatedly refresh the county roster.
When to Stop Searching the County Roster and Use IDOC
The Sheriff states that people sentenced to more than 364 days are taken to the Illinois Department of Corrections. After a state transfer, the McHenry County jail roster is no longer the right long-term custody search.
Check the McHenry County roster one final time.
Look for sentence or transfer-related information and copy the court case number.
Check the Circuit Clerk case.
Verify sentencing and the most recent court event.
Allow for transfer processing.
A newly sentenced person may not appear instantly in the state search while transport and intake are occurring.
Use the state result for prison information.
Once an IDOC record appears, use IDOC for the state facility and state-custody details rather than continuing to rely on the county roster.
Real-World McHenry County Jail Search Scenarios
Arrest happened this morning
Use the confinement-date report, refresh it, and avoid assuming immediate online visibility during intake.
Family member vanished from roster
Check whether the record moved outside the three-day release window, whether the person transferred or whether temporary-out status applies.
Federal case suspected
Call the Jail Main Office because federal detainees are not displayed in the public McHenry roster.
Court date shown tomorrow
Copy the case number and verify the event through the Circuit Clerk before driving to Woodstock.
Roster says no bond
Do not interpret the wording using old Illinois cash-bail rules. Check the current court release/detention order.
Want release alerts
Register through VINE rather than manually checking the PDF every hour.
Want to send money fast
Use Access Corrections after verifying custody; a mailed money order can take up to a week.
Want to send a book
Obtain Mail Officer approval before ordering because unapproved titles can be rejected.
State prison sentence
Check the court disposition and transition to IDOC’s custody search after transfer.
PREA and Reporting Sexual Misconduct
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office publishes a zero-tolerance policy regarding sexual abuse, assault and sexual harassment involving people in custody. Reports are to be investigated, and the Sheriff provides an external reporting form.
For an immediate emergency: use the appropriate emergency response rather than relying on an online form.
How to Request a McHenry County Sheriff Record
A current inmate roster is not the same as a police report, jail incident file or other Sheriff record. Use the Sheriff’s FOIA process when the information you need is not already publicly posted.
Identify the exact record.
State whether you need an arrest report, jail record, incident material or another specifically identifiable Sheriff record.
Collect identifiers.
Include names, dates, approximate times, case or incident numbers and relevant locations.
Choose the desired response type.
The online form allows options such as email, mail, fax, electronic/CD or in-person response.
Describe the records narrowly.
Specific requests are easier for the public body to identify and process.
Save the submitted request.
Keep your wording and submission date in case follow-up is necessary.
Published FOIA copy charges
The Sheriff lists the first 50 black-and-white letter/legal pages as free and 15¢ per page thereafter, with actual copying costs for color copies.
