Cook County Individual in Custody Locator, Housing, Visits, Bond and Jail Services

CCDOC means the Cook County Department of Corrections, the large jail complex on Chicago’s Southwest Side. The official Individual in Custody Locator can show the person’s booking identification number, custody information, housing location, court details and booking photograph when available.

This guide brings the important Cook County rules into the page itself. Use the official portal only for the live inmate lookup, visitor application, visit scheduling, deposit, phone-account or court-search action that cannot be completed here.

Identity and accuracy warning: A Cook County booking, charge description or photograph does not prove guilt. Compare the legal name, date of birth, booking number, booking date, housing location and court information before sending money, arranging a visit or identifying the person publicly.

Choose the right CCDOC search route

1
I know the legal name

Search the official locator. Compare all available identifiers instead of selecting the first similar name.

2
I have a booking number

Keep it beside the person’s exact name. It is needed for trust-fund deposits, mail and many jail-service calls.

3
I know the court case

Use the Cook County Clerk’s case search for docket history. Court data and current jail custody answer different questions.

Useful timing fact: Cook County says locator results are typically published about four to six hours after a person is booked and processed. Very recent arrests may not appear immediately.

Live lookup workflow

How to search the CCDOC jail roster correctly

Open the Sheriff’s Individual in Custody Locator The official locator is the controlling public search for someone housed in the Cook County Jail system.
Accept the visitor and locator terms The first page explains the visitor-application rules. Select the agreement option and continue to the live search.
Search the legal name Use the first and last name the person would have given during booking. Try the full legal spelling before using nicknames.
Try alternate name formats Test a maiden surname, former surname, hyphenated version, omitted middle name, spacing difference or common spelling variation.
Open the likely record Compare the date of birth, physical description, booking photograph, booking number, custody status and housing division.
Save the booking identification number Copy the number exactly. Cook County requires the exact name and booking number for deposits and inmate mail.
Confirm housing before visiting Divisional housing can change because of classification, court movement, medical needs, safety needs or programming.
Call when the status is unclear Use the automated line at 773-674-5245 or customer service at 773-674-1945.

How to understand a Cook County inmate result

Common CCDOC locator fields explained
Result field What it means What to do with it
Booking identification number The jail identifier assigned to the person’s booking. Use it for deposits, mail, phone-account questions and calls to jail staff.
Booking date When the person entered the Cook County booking process. Use it to separate a new custody event from an older booking.
Housing division The current CCDOC building or unit assignment. Use it for visitation, video-visit contact and property-release routing.
Charge or case information The allegation or court matter connected with the custody record. Check the Clerk’s case portal because charges and court status can change.
Court location or date The court assignment currently associated with the case. Recheck through the Clerk or call court staff before traveling.
Booking photograph A photograph taken when a full booking was completed. Use only as one identity check. A missing photograph does not prove the person was not arrested.
Custody status Whether the person is currently shown in Cook County custody. Call before pickup or travel because release and transfer information can change.
Why a photograph may be missing: Cook County explains that a defendant who is released after the initial court appearance may not always be fully booked into CCDOC, so a locator photograph may never be created.
No-result troubleshooting

Why the person may not appear in the CCDOC locator

The arrest was less than six hours ago The person may still be in police custody, court processing, transport, intake, fingerprinting or medical screening.
The name was entered differently Try the legal surname only, a maiden name, hyphen variation, compound surname or spelling without punctuation.
The person was released from court Some defendants are released before completing the CCDOC booking process and may not appear as a housed inmate.
The person is in another county An arrest near a county boundary or on an outside warrant may result in transfer to another jurisdiction.
The person entered state custody A sentenced person may have transferred to the Illinois Department of Corrections rather than remaining at CCDOC.
The record is older The live locator is designed primarily for current custody. Use Cook County court records for historical case information.
Phone script “I am trying to confirm whether [full legal name], date of birth [date], is currently in Cook County custody. The arrest may have occurred on [date] through [police agency]. Can you confirm whether the person is still processing, housed, released or transferred?”
Missing booking-photo request: The Sheriff says digital booking photographs from 2009 forward may be requested when the locator returns no photograph. Prepare the full legal name and all available arrest details before contacting the Sheriff’s communications office.

Cook County Jail divisions and what the housing result means

CCDOC covers about 96 acres and eight city blocks. The main public address is 2700 South California Avenue, but some housing divisions, visitor entrances and property-release steps use nearby addresses.

Active CCDOC housing divisions
Division Address or location Current published use
Division 2 2700 S. California Ave. General-population men with minimum or medium classifications in dormitory-style housing.
Division 3 Annex Cook County Jail campus Female general-population housing across minimum, medium and maximum classifications.
Division 6 2801 S. Sacramento Ave. Minimum- and medium-classification housing.
Division 9 2834 W. 31st St. Medium- and maximum-security general population, protective custody and disciplinary rehabilitation units.
Division 10 2950 S. California Ave. General-population male housing; the building has also served medical and psychiatric functions.
Division 11 3015 S. California Blvd. Medium-security pod housing and programs including Recipe for Change.
Division 16 CCDOC campus Programming participants, including Mental Health Transition Center-related housing.
External Operations 2834 W. 31st St. Perimeter security and transportation to courts, hospitals and clinics.
Do not mail to the division address: Ordinary personal mail uses the person’s exact name and booking number at 2700 S. California Avenue unless CCDOC gives a different written instruction.
Visitor approval

How to get approved to visit someone at CCDOC

Cook County requires a visitor application and background check. Approval for one individual in custody does not automatically approve visits with another person.

Find the person in the official locator Open the matching inmate record and confirm the booking identification number and housing information.
Submit a visitor application for that person Complete every required field accurately. Cook County strongly encourages online submission through the Sheriff’s system.
Wait for the background check Do not call the day after applying. Cook County instructs applicants to allow seven business days before asking about status.
Check approval status Call the Visitor Information Center at 773-674-8225 or email doc.visitation@cookcountyil.gov.
Have the detained person add your name Family or friends should coordinate with the individual in custody, who must place the visitor’s name on the visitation list.
Wait for scheduling contact A Cook County Sheriff’s Office staff member contacts the visitor to arrange an available day and time.

When a new application is required

Same continuous custody period

If an application was already submitted for that person and the person remains continuously in custody, Cook County says the visitor generally does not need to reapply.

Release and later re-incarceration

A new visitor application is required when the person was discharged and later returned to custody.

Common visitor-application denial reasons

Cook County visitor-screening criteria
Denial reason What it means Practical response
Invalid or unverifiable information Names, addresses, identification or other application details could not be verified. Review every field and use current legal information.
Applicant is 17 or younger Minors do not submit a standard adult application. Attend with an approved parent or guardian and bring required minor ID.
First year of parole or probation Cook County applies a mandatory waiting period. Reapply only after the restriction period has expired.
House arrest A person currently on house arrest is not eligible under the published policy. Wait until the mandatory restriction no longer applies.
Open criminal case or applicant on bond Open cases may disqualify the applicant; misdemeanor traffic cases are excluded from this rule. Confirm the case status before applying.
Recent correctional discharge The applicant left CCDOC, IDOC or another verified correctional facility within the last 60 days. Wait until the 60-day restriction has ended.
Warrant or registration problem Outstanding warrants, ICE detainers or inaccurate legally required registration can prevent approval. Resolve the underlying legal issue before reapplying.
Protective order A protective order involves the visitor and the requested individual in custody. Do not attempt contact that could violate the order.
Safety or security concern A CCSO supervisor identifies a facility safety issue. Ask the Visitor Information Center whether any review process is available.

Rules for children

A child age 17 or younger does not submit an adult visitor application
The child must attend with an approved parent or guardian
A high-school-age child needs current state or school photo ID
One approved adult may accompany up to three children

CCDOC in-person and Microsoft Teams visitation

Cook County offers in-person visits and family video visits. Family video visits use Microsoft Teams, so the visitor needs an active Teams account connected to an email address.

Before scheduling

The visitor must be approved and the individual in custody must add the visitor to the visitation list.

Video platform

Family video visits are conducted through Microsoft Teams rather than a jail-specific consumer video app.

Conduct rules

No alcohol, smoking, nudity, sexual behavior or other inappropriate conduct. Violations can revoke visitation privileges.

Division-specific family video visit numbers

Dedicated Cook County video-visit phone lines
Housing location Dedicated number When to use it
Division 2 / 6 Annex 773-674-3745 Questions tied to a scheduled Teams visit for this housing area.
Division 3 Annex 773-674-4894 Family video-visit assistance for Division 3 Annex.
Division 5 773-674-0667 Division 5-related visit assistance.
Division 6 773-674-5336 Division 6 Teams visit assistance.
Division 8 Cermak 773-674-5761 Cermak-health housing visit assistance.
Division 8 RTU 773-674-0077 Residential Treatment Unit visit assistance.
Division 9 773-674-2295 Division 9 Teams visit assistance.
Division 10 773-674-7640 Division 10 Teams visit assistance.
Division 11 773-674-3722 Division 11 Teams visit assistance.
Division 16 / MHTC 773-674-7159 Mental Health Transition Center-related visit assistance.
Scheduling process: Cook County’s current visitor notice says the detained person adds the approved visitor to the list and CCSO staff contacts the visitor with a day and time. Do not assume a visit is confirmed merely because an application was approved.
Bond and discharge

Cook County bond rules after Illinois pretrial reform

Illinois eliminated cash bail for new cases beginning September 18, 2023. However, Cook County explains that cases filed before that date may still carry an older cash-bond requirement.

Jail bonding location

Division 5
2700 S. California Ave.
Chicago, IL 60608

Jail bonding hours

10 a.m.–6 p.m., 365 days a year.

Current accepted methods

Credit card, cash or certified check. Money orders are not accepted for bond.

Suburban courthouse bond locations

When an older case requires cash bond, Cook County also lists suburban courthouse payment during weekday banking hours—Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m., excluding holidays.

Cook County suburban bond locations
District Courthouse Address
Second District Skokie Courthouse 5600 Old Orchard Road, Skokie, IL 60077
Third District Rolling Meadows Courthouse 2121 Euclid Ave., Rolling Meadows, IL 60008
Fourth District Maywood Courthouse 1500 Maybrook Ave., Maywood, IL 60153
Fifth District Bridgeview Courthouse 10220 S. 76th Ave., Bridgeview, IL 60455
Sixth District Markham Courthouse 16501 Kedzie Ave., Markham, IL 60428
Confirm that the case actually has an older cash bond Do not assume every Cook County detainee can be released by paying money. Newer cases follow Illinois pretrial-release procedures.
Wait until intake paperwork is processed A newly arrested person must complete court and CCDOC processing before an applicable bond can be posted.
Check for outside holds When another agency has a hold, the process may require additional information after the person posting bond appears in person.
Use the correct accepted payment Cook County accepts credit card, cash or certified check under the current Division 5 process. Money orders are not accepted for bond.
Allow discharge processing time Cook County says release commonly takes about two to three hours after bond is posted.
Expect extra time for GPS placement Release can take longer when the Adult Probation Department must install or activate a GPS monitor.
Do not confuse bond with trust-fund money: Western Union, MoneyGram, JailATM and commissary deposits do not automatically satisfy a court bond.
Trust account and commissary

How to add money to CCDOC books

Every Cook County individual in custody has a trust-fund account. The account can be used for approved commissary purchases, and Cook County currently allows up to $100 in commissary purchases each week.

What commissary may include

Stamped envelopes
Toiletries
Phone cards

Court case and hearing

How to check a Cook County criminal case after finding the inmate

The Sheriff’s locator provides custody information. The Clerk of the Circuit Court provides the electronic docket for historical and active cases.

Copy the case number from the locator A booking may have more than one court case, so save every number displayed.
Open the Clerk’s online case search Search by case number when available. A case-number search is less likely to mix records belonging to people with similar names.
Review the electronic docket The docket contains brief summaries of filings and court events, not the complete official paper record.
Expect recent updates to be delayed The Clerk says a new filing or court event may take several days to appear online.
Use courthouse terminals for very recent activity Public-access terminals may be more appropriate when a new filing or hearing result is not yet visible online.
Confirm the next court date Criminal Division staff can check by name or case number. Court location and dates should be reconfirmed before travel.
Online docket limitation: Cook County states that online case information is not the official court record and does not guarantee accuracy, completeness or currency.
